So
Who's Cammi Granato? Raised in Downers Grove, Illinois (where
my home rink is :-) Cammi (stands for Catherine Michelle) grew up to become
one of the most popular and award-decorated women hockey players.
Cammi attended Herrick Junior High (boo :-p) and Downers Grove North high
school (yeah!). Before attending Providence College, Cammi had mostly
played on all boys teams, but she still excelled in the women's teams...
all the way to becoming one of the top players in the world. After
her eligibility to play college hockey expired, Cammi went on to play for
Concordia University in Canada where she was merely another top player
among Canada's best. As captain of the first U.S. Women's Olympic
hockey team, Cammi led the best of the U.S. to winning the gold medal.
After trailing Canada with the silver in the World competition for so many
years, the U.S. finally prevailed as Olympic champions.

the right is a picture of Sarah Tueting (goalie of the U.S. team), a spaced-out
looking me, and Cammi taken on December 22 (23?) 1997... (at Darien Sportsplex)
before lots of people even knew who they were. I had the opportunity
of meeting both Cammi and Sarah without there being hoards of people.
I also found out I knew her family more than I thought I did. Her
cousin recognized me from work, which surprised me. Cammi and Sarah
were really nice and easy to talk to. Afterwards Cammi scrimmaged
with the Huskies Midget team. (If I had brought my equipment at the
time, I could've gone on the ice for a little while, too :-( )
She showed me her equipment and what to look for. After cringing
seeing the stuff with the swooshes on it (Nike + hockey = bad)... I got
a general idea on what stuff was on the market for women players (and that's
not a lot of stuff).
